Hi there, my name is Philip Harris, and I'm an illustrator and printmaker based just outside Exeter. I've lived in Devon my whole life, surrounded by moorland, coastlines and woods. These natural landscapes have always been a significant source of inspiration for me, and you can see their reflection in my work.
During my university years, I inherited a collection of dip pens and nibs from my grandfather, whom I never had the opportunity to meet. His legacy has significantly influenced my creative process, and I am passionate about learning more about traditional techniques. Recently, I've started exploring relief printing, a medium my grandfather also worked in. By using this art form, I've been able to complement my current linework approach. On some days, I work in a dip pen to capture the landscape in linework. On other days, I focus on tone and value through printmaking. Working in both mediums has allowed me to develop my visual language and skill set.
I love spending time in nature and finding inspiration in the rugged Tors on Dartmoor, tranquil woodlands, and everchanging coastlines. I use a mix of sketches on location and photographs, which I bring together in my home studio to capture a sense of place.
Although these terrains have surrounded me my whole life, I've only recently started delving more into the origins of the historical stories and folk tales that weave themselves throughout the fields and moors of Devon. I find happiness in using the skills passed down by my grandfather to bring these stories to life.
